On the topic of “walking backwards into culture”, I’ll never forget when I realized that Gwen Stefani’s “Rich Girl” samples Fiddler on the Roof. I heard the song first and so, when I heard the tune in Fiddler, I thought it was a weird anachronism, not the other way around. 😅🤦🏻

I use to be apart of the “go woke go broke crowd” (I’m embarrassed of myself, I was young but that’s not a excuse) the thing is, there’s a difference between not wanting politics and wanting YOUR politics. Everything is political, to be a-political would require you to have no opinions, thoughts, or ideals. it’s fine if the developers of COD want to make a war game that isn’t FOCUSED on politics (tho again it is still political) but the fact is, when you deal with groups like terrorist, The cartel, or anything else like that, you do not get to say your game isn’t political.

*Long comment ahead.* This video reminds me a lot of what it was like for my 9-year old self to experience Emerl the Gizoid through the lens of the game he comes from. For those of you who already know the name, I salute you. You know what's coming. A golem of metal attached to a franchise known for a completely different character. Game begins, and he finds himself both protagonist and deuteragonist of every story chapter he's in. The game is good, but limited; gaining experience for his sake is a harrowing task without knowing how to make it consistent, and years later, even when I _know,_ it still requires me a ton of grinding for making Emerl as powerful as the game implies him to be. Then at the end of each chapter, a simple vocal prompt, "Okaaay!♪" uttered by the game's antagonist, informs me that I can go on, that a new chapter of Emerl's journey is out. It was like a ritual. Experience the story, defeat the odds, struggle to get better, finish the chapter, and "♪Okaaay!♪" you keep on keeping on. Emerl begins without being able to say or do anything on his own. By chapter two, all he can do is say a word, them repeat it twice. "Play, play!" "Fight, fight!" "Located, located!" By chapter four, he's begun to create emotional links with every protagonist he follows, and copies not just their fighting moves, but also their speech patterns. By Chapter 7, he readily stands in front of the very antagonist who abandoned him at the beginning of chapter one, thanking him for dumping him like a sack of nothing; because that very act was what allowed Emerl to become the sentient robot he became as a result of it. And yet, to my child self's horror, the antagonist forces Emerl to establish a link with him with the press of a button, thus undoing every single aspect of Emerl's emotional progress made through the journey. And then, the only way to save this child yet avatar of mine is to take control of the first protagonist he linked himself with... ...And kill him. And where I expected him to explode after a tearful goodbye like in so many other games, no. Nooo. In this one, my reward for raising him for so long is to watch him agonize for six entire minutes. Emerl asks himself why he's in pain, if he's going to die, then he refuses to accept that possibility, and then he accepts it, allowing himself to say goodbye to each and every person he linked himself with across his journey. Only _then_ does he blow up. Only _then_ am I released from this scene. I think what really... sunk it, for me, wasn't that he exploded. It wasn't even that the ending song was a tad longer at the end of this final chapter. No, it was that, when it ended, there was no "Okaaay!♪" to tell me that I'd unlocked a new chapter. Because the game was finished. The ritual was broken. The reality of the situation was inescapable. Another thing that really did it for me - and why it made me cry - is that I was born with rather severe anger issues. Losing myself to them because of my brother's ability to provoke me felt _exactly_ like Emerl's demise. Specifically, his entire growth denied to him with the press of another's button, of another's scheme. No matter how many friends I made, how much I grow, I would come back home and at any moment, he could press a metaphorical button and undo all of it, then call me a violent monster - then I'd be punished. Like Emerl, the only way my child self found, in order to grow, was to assimilate behaviors from others. Maybe if I used this line, or that behavior, or this bit of body language from this or that friend, things would be different. I was - I _am_ - a patchwork of everything that made an impression on me. And I don't think that's sad! I love being a patchwork, it feels... Smart. Like I pay attention, like I care. Emerl taught me that it's valid; even if it ends in a sad explosion. I'm not a robot, so maybe it'll end different in real life. Yet when I try to express what Sonic Battle means to me, all I'm told is that it's just a Sonic game, and wow, I must really like Sonic. As if... As if that fictional hedgehog - whom I _do_ like, I mean some of his games are pretty cool - had _anything_ to do with the personal tale I just narrated. As if I love Emerl and what he means to me solely because Sonic is attached to the title. What would they say if the game was called Gizoid's Journey? "Wow, you must really like robots/games"? It very much feels like Sonic Battle's meaning was made for that past version of me, honestly, and I've carried it with me ever since. So... Yeah, there's much of this video I can absolutely understand, in a very personal way. I'm sure that's the case for a lot of people here! I certainly felt something when the nazca lines were mentioned, for instance - I'm a huge YGO fan, and the Earthbound Immortals only fueled my interest in those glorious geoglyphs. Anyway. Thank you for reading, whoever bothered. Take care of yourselves, yeah? I hope you can find your Emerl; and if you have already, cherish that personal meaning.

From personal fandom experience, I've come to the conclusion that if a fan is going to present a creator's work against their wishes, the moral thing to do is to at least be an honest narrator about it! have some caveat at the top: "The creator does not want their work shared or shown or displayed. I simply think they are wrong to demand that. I am showing this without their consent." I mean specifically when an artist has declared that everything they have ever made should be burned and scrubbed from the internet, and a fan saves some copies and distributes them against the artist's wishes. Because once a piece of art has been finished, made, published, and even been SITTING OUT THERE ON A WEBSITE, FOR YEARS... I do NOT believe that an artist has the right to sneak into people's houses at night and yoink their "I hate it now" book or painting off the new owner's shelf. They cannot demand that every copy be burned. They can demand that any further distributions halt, or have a warning label placed on em. But that book-publishing scenario is very different from The Beginner's Guide, because those in-game games were NEVER published, so there was only the one fan who ever had access to publishing them against their will... More similar to The City installation, I guess. Or the Black Paintings. When it's a collaboration that is poisoning the original direction and artists' intent, I think the artist has full rights and justification for kicking that collaborator out. Because that work isn't done, it's a living, growing work. But at some point, artists pass away. And they may want something specific done with their works, like "this painting should always be lit by candlelight only" (a real request from an artist from like 1800 that I heard about a museum in 2000 struggling with) but there HAS to be some compromise at SOME point. Art does not breathe, does not live, if it cannot be moved, cannot be reframed, or relit, or retranslated, all of that. The world moves on without the artists, and all we have is their art. There has to be a conversation. Otherwise, the art stops speaking, and it dies too....

I hadn't considered that the fact that when the art isn't presented, it doesn't really feel right to go "death of the author" on it. When there is no intentional context provided, we care more than usual about what the artist actually meant rather than how we feel about it. If only because we can't really know, and that its easier to convince ourselves that our interpretation is right when the author never presents a contradictory one.

Worth noting that Soviet skepticism was in no small part because they had fallen behind technologically, particularly in space and electronics. There's a reason why the US landed on the moon first and it was because unlike the Soviet system, the US didn't cut corners to meet arbitrary deadlines, particularly to beat the USSR (which is the only reason Sputnik launched when it did and why it was scaled down in what the satellite was meant to do). By the 70s and 80s, the US was way ahead in electronics and computing. It's why NATO aircraft were superior *especially* in the 4th gen, they could fit smaller computers that were more powerful in them allowing better radar without adding massive weight, it's why US armored vehicles were absolutely able to seal club Soviet armor in Iraq with their use of GPS and superior FCS (range finders, stabilizers, etc). The F-15 was basically made to counter what we thought the MiG-25 could do, even though its characteristics were overstated. Speaking of, the Soviets were well aware of the fact that they, well, were full of it. They knew the US was ahead in things like rocketry and that for most of the Cold War their arsenal was smaller and less capable. Sure they'd have bluff and bluster and do various tricks like flying the same aircraft over and over or repainting symbols on missile launchers in a parade and show them off later, but they knew the truth. Thing is, to some extent they assumed the US was just as full of it in terms of what they claimed to be capable of. You combined these two things together and yeah, of course they'd be dismissive of SDI in any form. To be clear, some parts of SDI were bonkers, like truly insane even as far as insane goes, but the concept wasn't. We're seeing the fruits of missile defense efforts now with plenty of interception systems proving quite capable of intercepting ballistic and cruise missiles. The most advanced capabilities are of course secret but we've seen plenty of successful interception, including of Iran's most recent attack. The systems can't be perfect, but they can get close.

As a White men from the south, I never understood the need of a “racial hierarchy”. What separates the White person from the Black person from the Spanish person to the Jewish person? It’s nonsense, what’s next, are we suppose to have an eye color hierarchy? A hair color hierarchy? Why should anyone have to be categorized into a box? Why do immigrants need the blessing of God the father just to have a home in America? I’ve come to realize that the America I love, the America I’m proud of…. Doesn’t exist. America is suppose to be the “land of the free” yet why is it only the land of the free white people? Why are racist cops given a tap on the ass every time they commit unwarranted murderer against a minority? Why is this country so hypocritical? Why is can’t there be room for everyone, White people, Black people, Spanish, Jewish, Men, Women why does someone have to be “superior” than the other? I feel like so many White people, including myself I will admit, get so uncomfortable when confronted with stuff like this in the country, some of us tend to self project and say things like, “other groups did it too!” I will admit I’m guilty if this as it’s a coping mechanism. However, I feel like these guys miss the entire point. The point isn’t to say that white people are evil, it’s to say that racial purity, Human purity/superiority is bad, and only leads to the worse of humanity, the animalistic side that craves being on top of everyone else. But what separates every other species on the planet is that, we have a choice. Fight back against oppression of all kinds, callout racism, homophobia, sexism, and help pave a way for the America that was promised to us. I love this country, I just want to be proud of it.
